Summer is coming
June 12, 2010
Hello everyone, happy Saturday!
The sun is so warm today that I'm actually going to spend some time indoors. This morning there were military jets overhead, part of the Fort Rodd Hill celebrations for Fisgard Lighthouse's 150th birthday. The sound of those jets is how I would imagine it would sound to rip a hole in the sky. All the birds and animals in my area were making sounds of alarm as the jets roared past. I think the Snowbirds are here too. I love the Snowbirds. I had plans to go down to see the celebrations but don't feel well today. A quiet day in the garden and at home is better for me.
Recently I have been focused on finishing up the school year at the Saanich Adult Education Centre. My students are making silkscreen prints, wearing their own art on t shirts and hoodies. Course completions are rolling in and we're gearing up to celebrate with our student awards day, staff parties and golf luncheon. Then summer will be here!
We're doing multiple renovations on our home, including replacing the roof and siding and all the windows. Amidst all the chaos I am still doing some art work, although a lot of my creative energy is going towards the garden and building an outdoor cat enclosure/cockatiel aviary. I have also been taking lots of photographs. The other day Sarah and I were really lucky to see a pair of barred owls by our yard and the creek. Also the hummingbird nest by our back fence now holds two hatched baby birds, all wrinkled and fuzzy with new down. It's so exciting to see so much wildlife right here at home! To see some of my latest photos please visit my website's photography section.
My most recent art project is a linocut print portrait of one of my students. She is drawing beside a creek near our school in Saanich. In the SENCOTEN language the creek is called KENES. In English it is named Hagan Creek. I'm almost finished carving the plate and will soon print an edition.
The Moss Street Paint In is coming up very soon on July 17th. I will be there with a display and demonstration of my work. My location will most likely be at Moss and Bond Street like last year but I haven't had confirmation of my site yet. I will keep you posted.
On June 20th the KUNAMOKST mural is moving to it's permanent home on Galiano Island. At the same time the book about the mural will be released. Many of the artists will be there for the occasion. The unveiling event is open to the public. See below for the official information and schedule of activities.
I hope to see many of you and some family members at the unveiling!
That's all for now. Take care and enjoy the sun!
Cheers!
Caroline
